Pratie Oaten – Traditional Irish Potato Oat Griddle Bread

Description: Pratie Oaten is a traditional Irish sweet griddle bread made from mashed potatoes and oatmeal. Simple, hearty, and lightly sweetened, it was once a common farmhouse treat enjoyed hot off the griddle with butter, honey, or jam.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Serving Size: Serves 6

Ingredients

  • 250g (1 cup) mashed potatoes, cooled
  • 150g (1 ½ cups) medium oatmeal (rolled oats, coarsely ground)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 50g (3 tbsp) butter, melted
  • 50–75ml (3–5 tbsp) buttermilk (enough to bring dough together)

Instructions

Step 1 – Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix the mashed potatoes with oatmeal, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the melted butter, then gradually add buttermilk until you have a soft, workable dough.

Step 2 – Shape the Bread

Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Pat into a round about 1 cm (½ inch) thick. Cut into four triangles (farls).

Step 3 – Cook on the Griddle

Heat a lightly greased griddle or heavy frying pan over medium heat. Cook the farls for 4–5 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 4 – Serve

Enjoy warm with butter, honey, or jam for a truly authentic Irish farmhouse taste.
