MUSHY PEAS

Description: Mushy peas are a classic British and Irish side dish made from marrowfat peas, which are naturally starchy. These peas are simmered until tender, mashed, and seasoned to create a creamy, slightly chunky texture. They are a traditional accompaniment to fish and chips or roast meats and a beloved comfort food.

Preparation time: 5 minutes (if using canned peas) or 8-10 hours (if soaking dried peas overnight)

Cooking Time: 20-30 minutes (if using canned peas) or 1-1.5 hours (if using dried peas)

Serving size: 4-6 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of marrowfat peas (dried) or 2 cans of mushy peas (canned)
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional mint sauce for serving

Instructions:

If using dried peas:

  1. Place the dried marrowfat peas in a large bowl and cover them with water. Allow them to soak for 8-10 hours or overnight. This softens the peas.

  2. After soaking, drain the peas and rinse them in a sieve or colander.

  3. Place the soaked peas in a large saucepan and cover them with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1-1.5 hours or until the peas are tender. Skim off any foam that forms on the surface.

  4. Drain the peas and return them to the saucepan.

If using canned peas:

  1. Simply open the cans and drain the peas.

For both versions:

  1. Mash the peas with a potato masher or fork to your desired consistency. Some prefer them coarser, while others like them smoother.

  2. Add butter and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well.

  3. Serve hot as a side dish, traditionally with fish and chips. You can also drizzle them with mint sauce for an extra burst of flavor. Enjoy your mushy peas!
