IRISH BROWN BREAD

Description: A hearty, wholemeal bread made with a mix of whole wheat flour and white flour, often served with butter or jam.

Preparation time: 15-20 minutes

Cooking time: 45-50 minutes

Serving size: 8-10 slices

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup medium oatmeal
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, oatmeal, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Stir in the melted butter and buttermilk until just combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  5. Bake the Irish Brown Bread for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the bread cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. I usually like to serve my Irish Brown Bread with butter, cheese, or jam. But smoked salmon is also a tasty treat!!
