Description: A hearty and flavorful pie filled with tender beef and savory mushrooms, all topped with a golden pastry crust. It’s a classic Irish dish that is perfect for a comforting meal.
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Chilling time: 2 hours
Serving size: 6 Servings
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup Guinness or stout beer
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, and pepper. Toss the beef stew meat in the flour mixture until coated.
- In a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Brown the beef in batches until well seared on all sides. Remove the beef from the pot and set aside.
- In the same pot, add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is softened and translucent.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and continue cooking until they are golden brown and tender.
- Return the beef to the pot and pour in the beef broth and Guinness beer. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and bay leaf. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven. Allow the pie filling to cook for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender and the flavors have melded together.
- Remove the pot from the oven and discard the bay leaf. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Increase the oven temperature to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to fit the size of your pie dish.
- Pour the beef and mushroom filling into a pie dish, then place the puff pastry over the top, sealing the edges.
- Brush the beaten egg over the pastry to create a golden crust.
- Cut a few slits in the pastry to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Place the pie in the oven and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Slice and serve the Irish Beef and Mushroom Pie while warm. It pairs well with a side of mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
- Enjoy this delicious and comforting Irish dish!
Note: You can customize the recipe by adding other vegetables such as carrots or peas to the filling, or even adding a sprinkle of grated cheese on top of the pastry before baking.
