CABBAGE AND POTATO BAKE

Description: Cabbage and Potato Bake is a comforting and hearty dish that combines layers of cabbage, potatoes, and a creamy sauce, baked to perfection.

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking Time: 1 hour

Serving size: 6 Servings

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 4 cups cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar or any melting cheese of choice)
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion, sauté until translucent.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic, stirring constantly for about a minute to create a roux.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook the sauce until it thickens, then season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if using. Remove from heat.
  5. Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of the baking dish, followed by a layer of cabbage. Pour some of the white sauce over the cabbage.
  6. Repeat the layers, alternating potatoes, cabbage, and sauce, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top. Ensure that the top layer of potatoes is covered with sauce.
  7. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top layer of potatoes.
  8. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes.
  9. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

This Cabbage and Potato Bake is a delicious side dish that pairs well with roasted meats or can be enjoyed on its own as a comforting vegetarian meal.
