Description: Buttermilk mashed potatoes are a tangy twist on the classic comfort food. The creamy texture and subtle tang of the buttermilk elevate the dish, making it a perfect side for roasted meats, grilled vegetables, or hearty stews.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Serving Size: 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet are ideal)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (more as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (plus more for boiling water)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Chopped fresh chives (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks for uniform cooking.
    • Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold, salted water.

  2. Cook the Potatoes:
    • Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

  3. Mash the Potatoes:
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Let them sit for a minute to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
    • Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or ricer until smooth.

  4. Add Buttermilk and Butter:
    • Gently heat the buttermilk and butter in a small saucepan or microwave until warm (do not boil).
    • Stir the warm buttermilk mixture into the potatoes. Add milk or cream if desired for a creamier consistency.

  5. Season and Serve:
    • Season the mashed potatoes with salt and black pepper to taste. Mix well until fluffy and smooth.
    • Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped chives if desired.

Serve your buttermilk mashed potatoes warm as a delicious and flavorful side dish that pairs perfectly with a variety of meals!
