Description: Cabbage and Potato Bake is a comforting and hearty dish that combines layers of cabbage, potatoes, and a creamy sauce, baked to perfection.
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 hour
Serving size: 6 Servings
Ingredients:
- 4 cups potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 4 cups cabbage, thinly sliced
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar or any melting cheese of choice)
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion, sauté until translucent.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic, stirring constantly for about a minute to create a roux.
- Gradually pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook the sauce until it thickens, then season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if using. Remove from heat.
- Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of the baking dish, followed by a layer of cabbage. Pour some of the white sauce over the cabbage.
- Repeat the layers, alternating potatoes, cabbage, and sauce, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top. Ensure that the top layer of potatoes is covered with sauce.
- Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top layer of potatoes.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes.
- After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
