Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking Time: 40 minutes

Serving size: 6 Servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium-sized cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add the sliced cabbage and cook for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes slightly tender. Drain and set aside.

  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, creating a roux.

  4. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture thickens, usually about 5 minutes.

  5. Add the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce, stirring until it is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

  6. Season the sauce with salt, black pepper, and paprika. Adjust the seasoning to taste.

  7. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the blanched cabbage. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the cabbage layer.

  8. Repeat the layers with the remaining cabbage and cheese sauce.

  9. If desired, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top for a crispy texture.

  10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly.

  11. Allow the scalloped cabbage to cool for a few minutes before serving.
